A lot of things went wrong for USC football in the Las Vegas Bowl against Texas A&M. Lincoln Riley clock management was atrocious. Jayden Maiava made some really bad mistakes. USC didn’t have anything close to a full roster of players due to the transfer portal in this new age of college football, in which there’s no really good reason to have a December portal window in the first place. Yet, in spite of these and other problems, the Trojans did manage to beat the Aggies, 35-31. If you wanted reason to believe in the Trojans, and if you wanted to find a source of real optimism for 2025, look to the offensive line. A patchwork line held the fort in front of Maiava against Texas A&M. New offensive line coach Zach Hanson turned in some really good work.
We all saw how important the offensive line was to this team and program in 2024. Younger players were not ready for early-season Big Ten road games at Michigan and Minnesota. Players got better later in the year, but not enough to lift the Trojans’ offense to the elite and expected Lincoln Riley standard. A change was needed, and when Josh Henson left to become the new offensive coordinator at Purdue, Riley moved quickly to fill the vacancy by promoting Zach Hanson from his previous position as tight end coach.
