Arizona State football flashes history at Hall of Fame before Peach Bowl

ATLANTA — The College Football Hall of Fame has everything a visitor here would expect in sprawling galleries on the second and third floors of the interactive museum.

The windbreaker Nick Saban wore leading Alabama over Georgia in the national championship game in 2018. Archie Griffin’s scarlet-and-gray No. 45 jersey, a reminder of the 5,177 yards he rushed for in winning two Heisman trophies for Ohio State. And lockers for the 2024 inductees, including Larry Fitzgerald, the first sophomore to win Walter Camp Player of the Year.

But before visitors get to any of that, they’ve got to get past a Terrell Suggs jersey and a Jackson He helmet.

It’s part of a display recognizing the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, in which ASU will face Texas on New Year’s Day in a College Football Playoff quarterfinal game, meaning the Sun Devils have made history before their biggest-ever game has even been played.

This is the sort of reward that comes only with winning.

Former ASU defensive end Terrell Suggs’ jersey and helmet on display at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta on Dec. 29, 2024. Suggs the the single-season NCAA record in 2002 with 24 QB sacks.

“Former Sun Devils LB Terrell Suggs was otherworldly in 2002, setting the single-season NCAA record with 24 QB sacks,” reads a small placard under a maroon No. 48 jersey. “The unanimous All-America selection finished his career with 163 tackles and 44 QB sacks.”

Next to that sits a gold helmet with a matte finish − “PT 42” above the facemask, Sparky on the side.

“Beginning his collegiate journey in Jamestown, ND,” a note with the helmet says, “and later playing in the Chinese National Football League, Jackson He became the first Chinese-born player to score a TD in (an) FBS game against rival Arizona in 2020.”

Measure this in eyeballs, and it’s no big…
