Boise State’s Maddux ‘Mad Dog’ Madsen is an unsung hero heading into Vrbo Fiesta Bowl

Boise State sophomore quarterback Maddux Madsen still isn’t sure how he got the nickname, “Mad Dog.” It’s clearly a play on words with his last name, but the origins are murky. Madsen wasn’t a wild or rambunctious child by any stretch of the imagination, yet it’s been with him for as long as he can remember.

“That’s just what I’ve I’ve been called when I was young,” Madsen said. “I thought I was going to get away from it when I left high school. But I realized very shortly that’s going to stick with me for probably the rest of my life.”

Madsen’s development is an under-the-radar reason Boise State is sitting at 12-1 and the No. 3 seed in the College Football Playoff.

“Maddux has gotten better every single week, he’s an elite competitor,” Boise State head coach Spencer Danielson said. “He makes great decisions with the football, doesn’t turn it over. Makes the big-time throw. He’s one…
