O’Donnell Fortune of South Carolina (25) crosses the goal line in the 2022 TaxSlayer Gator Bowl with a 100-yard touchdown on an interception return. It’s the longest defensive touchdown in bowl history and tied for the longest touchdown by any means.
Mississippi will play Duke on Jan. 2 at EverBank Stadium (7:30 p.m., ESPN) in the 80th TaxSlayer Gator Bowl.
The two 9-3 teams will be making history for their respective programs and the Gator Bowl. It’s the first time they have ever played, despite both being in the South and with stadiums 711 miles apart, and it’s Duke’s first appearance in the Gator Bowl. The Blue Devils are the last charter member of the ACC to play in the game.
The Gator Bowl is the nation’s sixth-oldest college post-season game, established in 1946 by a group of Jacksonville businessmen, most of them members of the Downtown Lions Club. Wake Forest beat South Carolina 26-14 in the first game.

1971, Auburn 35, Ole Miss 28: The greatest quarterback duel in the game’s history. The Tigers’ Pat Sullivan threw for 351 yards and two touchdowns and the Rebels’ Archie Manning threw for 180 yards and gained 95 on the ground while wearing a plastic sheath over his left (non-throwing) arm, which he had broken a month before.
2022, Notre Dame 45, South Carolina 38: In a game with two pick-sixes, Irish quarterback Tyler Buchner had the last word with a 16-yard TD pass to Mitchell Evans with 66 seconds left.
1978, Clemson 17, Ohio State 15: The Tigers stunned the Buckeyes and linebacker Charley Baumann became forever linked with the final game for legendary OSU coach Woody Hayes when he took a punch from Hayes after a clinching interception.
