Texas football passed its first College Football Playoff test, defeating Clemson 38-24 to advance to the quarterfinals. They’ll face the fourth-seeded Arizona State, who won the Big 12 after being voted to finish last in the preseason polls.
It’s been an incredible turnaround for the Sun Devils and coach Kenny Dillingham after going 3-9 in his first season with the team. Meanwhile, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian has his team rolling with a second consecutive CFP appearance.

The Longhorns are led by a stellar defense that allowed only four passing touchdowns before the CFP. However, Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik diced up the secondary for 336 yards and three touchdowns, raising concerns about the strength of Texas’ previous opponents.
Arizona State will test Texas’ defense on the ground instead of the air. Running back Cam Skattebo has been the second-most productive running back in college football, rushing for 1,568 yards and 19 touchdowns on six yards per carry. Texas’ running game is coming off its best game of the season, with Jaydon Blue and Quintrevion Wisner combining for 256 yards and four touchdowns.
