A consequence of this modern opt-out, transfer-portal era of college football is bowl games have gone from a crowning apex of a season to a launch pad for players getting their first real shot on a big stage.
At the 2024 Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl, the Louisville Cardinals and Washington Huskies, for different reasons, are doing that at the biggest position.

Harrison Bailey gets start for Louisville
Louisville is the team hit by opt-outs, as it will replace star quarterback Tyler Shough, who is preparing for the NFL draft, with junior Harrison Bailey, who is making his first start since 2020 when he was at Tennessee.
Demond Williams junior gets start for Huskies
A Washington team largely untouched by transfers and opt outs is going with freshman Demond Williams Jr., who was promoted to starter for the Huskies’ season finale against Oregon and will now take the keys in the Sun Bowl.
How those two relative newcomers play in their expanded roles will have a major bearing on who lifts the trophy at the end of the game.

“Harrison is looking forward to getting his opportunity,” Louisville coach Jeff Brohm said. “I think he’s going to go out there and play well. He’s got some good players around him; we need to make sure we utilize all of those and don’t put too much pressure on him.
“Anytime you’re a quarterback who doesn’t see the field, when you get the opportunity you want to grasp it and run with it. I’m hoping we play well around him and he relaxes and goes out there and plays well.”
