Brock Purdy’s touchdown throw on opening drive gives 49ers early lead

The 49ers opened Monday Night Football with a 37-yard kickoff return from Deebo Samuel. They were in the end zone 11 plays and 61 yards later.

Brock Purdy threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Ricky Pearsall for a 7-0 lead.

Officials initially ruled Pearsall down at the 1, but replay assist overturned it to a touchdown. It is unclear whether officials addressed the ball moving as Pearsall landed out of bounds.

Purdy was 3-for-3 for 34 yards, with George Kittle catching an 18-yarder and Chris Conley a 13-yarder.

Samuel had three carries for 16 yards.

Purdy converted a fourth-and-1 from the 5 with a 2-yard run. On the next play, Isaac Guerendo was stopped for no gain as Jauan Jennings blocked Terrion Arnold all the way to the back of the end zone. He was flagged for unnecessary roughness, which would have meant a second-and-goal from the 18, but Kerby Joseph came in and pushed Jennings into the stands. The penalties then became offsetting.
