Bielema vs Beamer, Cheez-It baths and more: Social media reacts to Illinois’ big bowl win

The Illinois football team on Tuesday evening capped its best season in nearly a quarter century with a 21-17 victory against South Carolina in the Citrus Bowl.

The Illini (10-3) earned their first 10-win season since 2001, overcoming six lead changes — and one coaching clash — to top the Gamecocks of the SEC at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida.

First things first: The Cheez-It bath

The bowl tie-ins are becoming more and more elaborate, with everything from mayo baths to edible Pop-Tart mascots making the silliness more and more commonplace.

After Illinois won the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl? Coach Bret Bielema earned a bath of the small orange snack cracker. Talk about a delicious celebration.

Big Ten vs SEC: It just means more?

The Big Ten went 2-0 on Tuesday in bowl games vs. the SEC — and is 4-1 overall — after Michigan surprised the college football world with a 19-13 victory against Alabama in the ReliaQuest Bowl.

Earlier this bowl season, Big Ten newbie USC topped an SEC opponent with a 35-31 victory against Texas A&M. Ohio State opened the College Football Playoffs with a 42-17 win over Tennessee.

Former Michigan football analyst Connor Stallions released a long post on X.com talking about the flawed strength-of-schedule component of most college rankings.

Now that the Big Ten is 4-1 vs the SEC in bowl games, I think it’s time we have a serious discussion. Strength of Schedule is a completely flawed metric that begins and ends with a biased opinion and should be taken with a grain of salt.
