Following an early-morning attack in New Orleans that left more than 10 people dead and dozens more injured, the 2025 Sugar Bowl will not be played Wednesday as scheduled, the bowl announced Wednesday afternoon.
The game will be played Thursday at 7:45 p.m.
According to the FBI and the New Orleans Police Department, the suspect drove a vehicle around a barricade on Bourbon Street and into a crowd of people celebrating the new year. The suspect then engaged in a shootout with police and was killed. Explosives and firearms were later found in the suspect’s vehicle.
The FBI, New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell, and President Joe Biden have said the incident is being investigated as an act of terrorism. The area has since been closed off, and, according to WNGO TV, workers expected to be at the stadium for the game were told “not to show up for work at this time” as of 9:48 a.m. local time on Wednesday.
In a statement posted to social media at 10:35 a.m. CT, the Sugar Bowl Committee said it was “devastated” by the event.
“We are in ongoing discussions with authorities on the local, state, and federal levels and will communicated further details as they become available,” the committee wrote in its statement.
