Why Shane Beamer got upset at Bret Bielema during South Carolina vs Illinois Citrus Bowl game

ORLANDO, Fla. — Things got a bit heated in the 2024 Citrus Bowl between South Carolina football and Illinois.

Coach Shane Beamer had to be held back late in the third quarter after Illinois coach Bret Bielema appeared to taunt him after signaling to Beamer with a substitution gesture used by game officials.

After the No. 14 Gamecocks (9-4) fell 21-17 to No. 21 Fighting Illini (10-3), Beamer addressed the situation in the post game press conference.

“It’s heated and competitive out there but in all my years of being around football I’ve never seen an opposing head coach come over to the opposing team sideline and basically make a gesture towards the opposing head coach,” Beamer said. “I think he was upset about something that we did on the kickoff return in regard to Juju McDowell on the throw back to Nyck Harbor but I would say he needs to check the rule book because that’s something we’ve cleared with the officials before game.

“Disappointing, got a lot of respect, obviously he’s been doing this for a long time but in all my years of coaching I’ve never seen that happen before … while his player is hurt, basically have something to say to the opposing head coach but I have my own team to worry about.”

The situation left Beamer visibly upset and he reportedly turned to ESPN sideline reporter Quint Kessenich and said, “You saw what he did.”

As Beamer was held back by different staff members, several players on both sides were on the field before it was resolved. Shortly after, South Carolina got further in the red zone and ultimately scored a go-ahead touchdown to start the fourth quarter, but the lead was short lived.

Beamer was asked to clarify the situation with Bielema, where he was walking away with his arms…
