Jayden Fielding snaps slump in Ohio State football’s win over Oregon in Rose Bowl

PASADENA, Calif. — Jayden Fielding pumped his fist.

It was early in the second quarter of Ohio State’s 41-21 rout of Oregon in the Rose Bowl on Wednesday when he had reason to celebrate.

Fielding split the uprights on a 46-yard field goal, a kick that might have been a footnote in a blowout if not for the fact that it snapped a slump that had hovered over him for weeks.

Ohio State’s Jayden Fielding (38) celebrates his 46-yard field goal against Oregon. He also made a 36-yard field goal.

“It was a good feeling,” Fielding said. “It was nice to be able to really bounce back.”

Teammates surrounded him as he returned to the visiting sideline.

“These guys have had my back the whole time, coaching staff included,” he said. “It’s been really good.”

Until the loss to Michigan that capped the regular season, Fielding had missed only one field goal in 2024.

But he missed two of his three attempts against the Wolverines on Nov. 30, both within 40 yards.

At the end of the first half in the Buckeyes’ win over Tennessee to open the College Football Playoff, he also attempted a field goal from 56 yards that fell short.

Fielding maintained this week that he was still confident and was shaking off the previous disappointment.

“It was pretty difficult,” Fielding said, “but you have to keep working, keep grinding, and eventually it’ll work out.”

He also made a 36-yard field goal attempt later in the second quarter of the quarterfinal against the Ducks, the first time in a span of six games that he had hit two in a game.

Since his setback against Michigan, Fielding said he made some minor tweaks in his approach, following down the field more and making better contact when striking the ball.

“I think it’s helping me quite a bit,” he said.

Fielding is now 11 of 15 on field goals this year following a 2023 season…
