A deadly terror attack on Bourbon Street in New Orleans led to the postponement of the Sugar Bowl, originally scheduled for New Year’s Day.
Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart emphasized the importance of reflection and unity in the wake of the tragedy, stating, “Some things are bigger than football.”
The Sugar Bowl, featuring No. 2 Georgia and No. 7 Notre Dame, will now be played on Thursday afternoon, with all tickets from the original date honored.
Penn State advanced to the Orange Bowl after defeating Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl, awaiting the winner of the rescheduled Sugar Bowl.
Ohio State and Texas secured their spots in the Cotton Bowl after respective victories in the Rose Bowl and Peach Bowl.
NEW ORLEANS – This New Year’s Day was supposed to be the College Football Playoff’s new quarterfinals with the matchups for the semifinals having been determined. Those plans were interrupted by a deadly terror attack on Bourbon Street in New Orleans during the early morning hours. It forced the Sugar Bowl to be delayed a day to ensure there was no further threat.
“Some things are bigger than football,” Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart posted to his Facebook page. “Today, we pause – not for rivalry or competition – but for reflection.”
