UND football adds four more assistant coaches

Jan. 2—GRAND FORKS — The first set of new assistant coaching additions of UND head football coach Eric Schmidt were announced by the school Thursday morning.

UND will add Wyoming’s Gordie Haug, Fresno State’s Ben Watkins, Washington’s Keaton Wilkerson and San Diego State’s Tyson Maeva.

Haug will coach the tight ends and receive the tag of assistant head coach, while Watkins will coach the linebackers, Wilkerson will coach the safeties and Maeva will coach the defensive tackles.

UND’s previously announced holdovers from Bubba Schweigert’s staff

: Isaac Fruechte, Shawn Kostich, Trevor Olson and Travis Stepps.

Donnell Kirkwood Jr., who coached UND running backs at UND the last two seasons, was originally announced as returning but has since announced on social media

he’ll be leaving Grand Forks. Herald sources say Kirkwood is headed to Wyoming.

With Kirkwood’s exit, UND has yet to announce assistant coaches for running backs, wide receivers and defensive ends. No coach has received the distinction of defensive coordinator at this point.

Of the four new additions, Haug may be the most recognizable to area football fans.

Haug spent 2017 to 2024 as the running backs coach and executive director of recruiting at Wyoming. He was the recruiting coordinator and director of player personnel in Laramie from 2014 to 2017.

Haug arrived in Laramie via former North Dakota State head coach Craig Bohl. Haug was running backs coach at NDSU in 2011 and 2012 as the Bison went 29-1 with two national titles in that time.

Haug started his coaching career at his alma mater of Bemidji State, where he was student assistant from 2007-09 before he was running backs coach and strength and conditioning coach from 2009-11.
