CANNONSBURG Raceland’s Linden Sammons is a man of few words.
But he doesn’t need words. He lets his actions do the talking, and it doesn’t take any deciphering to get the message of what Sammons is about.
“What you see from Linden is what you get,” Raceland coach Mike Salmons said. “He is a tireless worker. He was tremendous in the weight room and over the years, as he matured, that carried over onto the field. He ended up playing a lot of offense for us too. He didn’t touch the ball a lot, but he played with his hand in the ground. He’s all about the team.”
Sammons capped off his high school career by doing his part to help lead the Rams to a third-straight state championship appearance.
“This season, my senior year, meant a lot,” Sammons said. “Going in, everyone kind of counted us out at the start, we were 1-3, but we just kept practicing and kept working..”
Sammons was a force on defense this season. He led the team in forced fumbles with four, and recovered five total on the year.
He also led the team in solo tackles (64), total tackles (85), and sacks (nine).
Sammons’ performance this year landed him as this season’s The Daily Independent’s Player of the Year.
“It’s really rewarding,” Sammons said of the award. “Just seeing all the hard work payoff, from staying in the weight room, practicing, all that.”
With Sammons’ accomplishments, he’s glad to have been able to call his senior season a success and to be part of the Rams community.
“The community is a big part of our team,” Sammons said. “Everyone loves football here. Having them in the stands helps a lot. I’m thankful for this community.”
Also claiming top honors this season is TJ Maynard, who coached Russell to the state quarterfinals on a seven-game winning streak, and captured a district…
