The good news just keeps coming for Michigan football. The latest jolt to the program arrived on Friday night — though not totally unexpected — when the Wolverines announced on social media the signing of former Alabama running back Justice Haynes.
The Crimson Tide redshirt sophomore — who was not with the team in Tampa, Florida, when it lost to U-M in the ReliaQuest Bowl on Tuesday — reportedly was headed to Ann Arbor but his commitment had not arrived.
The former five-star recruit out of Buford, Georgia, who 247 Sports’ composite rankings had as the No. 3 running back in the nation and No. 34 overall player in the class of 2023, reportedly took visits to South Carolina and Ole Miss. On Friday, however, he made it official with the Wolverines.

The 5-foot-11, 210-pound back was third among Crimson Tide players, behind Jalen Milroe and Jam Miller, in rushing yards in 2024, with 448 yards on 79 carries (5.6 yards per touch), and tied for second with seven touchdowns. Haynes ran four times for 31 yards when Michigan defeated Alabama in last season’s Rose Bowl.
Now, he enters Ann Arbor as the most proven collegiate ball carrier in Tony Alford’s room. (Alford first tried to recruit Haynes to Ohio State when he coached the position in Columbus two years ago.) The departures of Donovan Edwards and Kalel Mullings leaves U-M looking to replace more than 1,500 yards and 16 touchdowns from the room.
