Although the transfer portal has been closed for a week, that hasn’t stopped Auburn football from making more transfer additions.
On Sunday, Sam Houston edge rusher Chris Murray announced he’d be continuing his college career on the Plains. He’s the 15th player to transfer to Auburn this offseason and the first to do so since the portal’s closing.
A rising redshirt senior, Murray has one season of eligibility remaining.
“The biggest thing for me was basically the relationships,” Murray said Sunday following his Auburn visit. “Then, on top of the relationships, showing me that I can contribute in this defense, and also just helping them. Like, I know that they can help me develop my skills, and I’ve got work to do. So I feel like, trying to get to the next level, here’s the place for me to do that.”
While Murray’s coming off a season full of career bests, he wasn’t a highly ranked portal prospect. He was considered the 242nd-best player available and 16th-best edge rusher on the board by On3, and 247Sports ranked him No. 492 player and No. 54 best edge rush transfer.
Still, Auburn’s getting Murray after a productive 2024. He had a career-high 35 tackles to go with 12.0 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks for the Bearkats, as well as two forced fumbles.
A three-star recruit out of high school, the Wichita Falls, Texas, native signed with TCU but never played a snap for the Horned Frogs. He signed with them over Ole Miss, Texas Tech, Cincinnati and Houston before transferring to Sam Houston for the 2023 season.

As Murray said, much of his decision boiled down to fit and family feel, so much so he nixed a previously scheduled visit to Virginia after coming to the Plains.
