Purdue football adds veteran running back from ACC program to bolster offense

WEST LAFAYETTE — Malachi Thomas has been on the on the field against Purdue football.

Now he’ll suit up for the Boilermakers.

Thomas joins new Purdue coach Barry Odom’s roster from Virginia Tech.

The former three-star running back from Hartwell, Georgia, played in 38 career games with the Hokies, including Purdue’s trip to Blacksburg in 2023.

Thomas was recruited to Virginia Tech by Vance Vice, who is now Purdue’s offensive line coach.

With the Hokies, Thomas averaged 4.4 yards per carry over his career. He had 1,132 yards and 7 touchdowns on 256 carries. Thomas also caught 28 career passes for 198 yards and a touchdown.

Thomas’ best performance of the 2024 season came in the regular season finale in which he rushed for 73 yards and a touchdown in an overtime loss to Syracuse.
