Though it lacked on-field drama, the Rose Bowl College Football Playoff quarterfinal between Oregon and Ohio State on New Year’s Day drew record numbers on ESPN.
Despite the game starting on ESPN2, 21.1 million viewers tuned in to watch the 41-21 Ohio State win, with a 24.3 million viewer peak, per ESPN.
It’s the most-watched non-NFL sporting even since last year’s national championship between Michigan and Washington.

The game drew significantly more viewers than any of the other quarterfinal games, including Texas-Arizona State (17.3 million), Notre Dame-Georgia (15.8 million) and Penn State-Boise State (13.9 million).
Outside of the main broadcast, Pat McAfee’s AltCast of the Rose Bowl was its highest-viewed ever with 2.4 million viewers, and “College GameDay” had its highest-watched Jan. 1 show ever with a peak of 4.6 million viewers.
The Ducks were a big draw this season on TV, with nine of its 14 games averaging more than 2 million viewers. NBC’s broadcast of Oregon’s first matchup against Ohio State averaged 9.6 million viewers, and its Big Ten title win over Penn State on CBS had 10.5 million.
