Ahead of the Cotton Bowl, Texas Head Coach Steve Sarkisian announced that he would not commit to Bert Auburn handling field goals against Ohio State. Sarkisian stated that they would observe Auburn’s kicking performance during warmups and make a decision accordingly.

“Football is an ultimate team sport, but there’s specific positions that are kind of individualized… There’s a psychological approach that we have tried to use and there’s obviously the physical approach. We’ll monitor that through pregame and make a decision and go.” — Steve Sarkisian

Auburn, who had previously made every extra point and his first field goal attempt, missed two consecutive 48-yard and 38-yard field goals in the fourth quarter against Arizona State with five minutes left. This season marks his worst performance in three years with the Longhorns, with his field goal percentage dropping from 82.9% last season to 64% this season.

Prior to the Arizona State game, Auburn had declared his intention to stay at Texas for his fifth year of eligibility. He has been with the Texas Longhorns all his years of eligibility and was awarded scholarship in June ahead of the Longhorns move to the SEC.
