Winona State football coach resigns after three seasons

Jan. 8—WINONA — Winona State University football head coach Brian Bergstrom has resigned from the position after three seasons.

The news broke Wednesday that Bergstrom had stepped down after accepting the defensive coordinator position at FCS Division I South Dakota State University.

Bergstrom — a Burnsville, Minn. native — had been on staff at SDSU from 2017-2021, starting as the safeties coach, before being promoted to co-defensive coordinator in 2019 — a role he held until he took the Winona State job.

During his three seasons at Winona State, Bergstrom led the Warriors to an 18-16 record with an NSIC South championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2022.

Longtime WSU assistant Brian Curtin has been named interim head coach.

Curtin, who has been on the WSU coaching staff since 1997, was the special teams coordinator and wide receivers coach during the 2024 season. Curtin has helped lead the Warriors to eight NSIC Championships, as well as three NSIC South Division crowns. WSU has advanced to the NCAA Division II Playoffs seven times since Curtin’s arrival while also playing in three Mineral Water Bowls.

Curtin will serve as the interim head coach until a national search for Winona State’s next head coach is completed.
