In a surprise move, four-star Cameron Sparks picks Virginia Tech

SAN ANTONIO – There was talk for a long time in Cameron Sparks’ recruitment that Tennessee would end up landing his commitment.

When that no longer became a possibility, there was a lot of chatter that Mississippi State would be the landing spot for the four-star receiver from Chattanooga (Tenn.) Baylor School who has played both ways during his high school career.

The Bulldogs were one of three finalists heading into his decision Saturday at the Navy All-American Bowl but it was Virginia Tech that landed his pledge over Mississippi State and Arkansas in a somewhat surprising move in the final days.

Sparks played a little cat-and-mouse during the week as he was seen wearing a Mississippi State necklace at times and during an interview after practice on Tuesday, the four-star talked highly of coach Jeff Lebby and what he’s building in Starkville.

The Baylor School standout liked the offense there and how Mississippi State was utilizing the portal for some players but also developing high school talent.

Arkansas emerged as a contender because Sparks hit it off with coach Sam Pittman and called him a “legend” and also loved his experience in Fayetteville so late in the recruiting process the Razorbacks became a player.

But there was distinct loyalty to Virginia Tech even though the Hokies weren’t mentioned a ton in his recruitment and especially down the stretch as decision day got closer.

Still, Virginia Tech was one of Sparks’ first offers and when push came to shove and he had to make a decision as some other teams faded away in his recruitment, that meant a lot to the four-star.

His relationship with coach Brent Pry and others in Blacksburg were a big selling point as well.

Sparks becomes the second four-star receiver in Virginia Tech’s class as he’s joined by Winston Salem (N.C.) Mount Tabor standout…
