Legendary former Colorado football head coach Bill McCartney passes away

Bill McCartney, the head coach and architect of Colorado football’s 1990 national championship team, passed away on Friday evening following a lengthy battle with dementia, his family announced. “Coach Mac” was 84.

During his 13 seasons leading the Buffs, McCartney went 93-55-5 while winning three consecutive Big 8 Conference titles from 1989-91. McCartney also coached the late Rashaan Salaam during his Heisman Trophy-winning season in 1994.

Following the 1994 season, Coach Mac stepped down from Colorado’s head job to devote his time to “Promise Keepers,” a Christian Organization he co-founded.

In 2013, McCartney was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Colorado athletic director Rick George, who McCartney hired as a recruiting coordinator coordinator in 1987, gave the following statement in a press release:
