How The Oklahoman selected the 2024 All-State high school football team

The Oklahoman’s high school sports staff rececently put together its 112th All-State football team.

Here is some insight on how it was assembled.

How were players nominated?

The Oklahoman emailed forms to the state’s high school football coaches, who filled them out and returned them in December.

Coaches nominated players from their programs and also had the option to mention athletes from other teams. Names that were repeatedly mentioned were strongly considered.

Players did not have to be nominated by their coach to be included on the roster, but if they were, it greatly helped their chances of earning a spot.

The Oklahoman also requested for coaches to attach full season statistics.

What factors did we weigh?

Several factors played a role in the selections.

Stats were strongly analyzed, as well as a player’s impact on the team, inlcuding if they had a strong season on both sides of the football.

Overall team success was also looked at, although players on struggling programs were still considered.

Feedback from coaches and our own observations also played a role.

Which decisions were toughest?

There are always difficult decisions, and this year was no different.

We had three finalists for Coach of the Year, and each had a strong case.

The coaches were Choctaw’s Jake Corbin, who led the Class 6A-II Yellowjackets to their first title since 1960 and second overall, Justin Merideth, who helped Edmond Memorial reach the Class 6A-I semfinals in the first year of his second stint as the Bulldogs’ head coach, and Chalmer Wyatt, who led Elgin to the Class 4A title.
