Safety King Mack transfers back to Penn State football after a year at Alabama

King Mack began his college career playing for Penn State football; then he decided to take his talents to the SEC and the University of Alabama. After spending a season in Tuscaloosa, Mack decided to return to where it all began, announcing his return to the Nittany Lions.

During his first stint in Happy Valley, Mack played in all 13 games in 2023-24 as a true freshman, primarily on special teams, where he recorded three tackles. During his 2024 season with the Crimson Tide, Mack played in all 13 games there as well, upping his tackle count to 14 during that season.

The 5-foot-10 safety left State College with a lot of promise; Penn State writer Frank Bodani referred to Mack as one of the program’s “future phenoms” in the spring of 2024. Now, he has a chance to continue what he started under head coach James Franklin.

Penn State’s secondary was a solid unit in 2024-25, even though safety KJ Winston missed most of the season with an injury. With Winston, senior safety Jaylen Reed and cornerback Jalen Kimber declaring for the NFL Draft, defensive coordinator Tom Allen will have some questions to answer before next season regarding the secondary.

With Mack’s commitment, Penn State now has six players coming to Happy Valley via the transfer portal: Michigan defensive lineman Owen Wafle, Texas A&M offensive lineman TJ Shanahan Jr and edge rusher Enai White; USC wide receiver Kyron Hudson; and Troy wide receiver Devonte Ross. With the season ending only a few days ago, there’s a strong chance this isn’t the end of the transfer portal activity for James Franklin.
