Week 10 in college basketball saw a big upset in the SEC.
After spending five weeks at No. 1 in both the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll and AP Top 25 after their 14-0 start, the Tennessee Volunteers suffered a 30-point blowout loss, 73-43 in Gainesville to the Florida Gators in a Top 10 matchup on Tuesday.
Rick Barnes’ Vols struggled again Saturday in Austin against the Texas Longhorns (11-5 overall) before coming from behind for a 74-70 win to avoid a second straight defeat.
As for Nate Oats’ Alabama Crimson Tide (ranked No. 5 in the polls), they cruised to an 88-68 win at South Carolina and got out to a 15-point lead in the second half at Texas A&M Saturday night before hanging on for a 94-88 road victory over a Top 10 Aggies team.
Mark Sears led Alabama in both victories this week, going for 22 points against the Gamecocks and 27 against A&M.
With Tennessee falling in ugly fashion at Florida, there will be a new No. 1 team in the polls come Monday but it won’t be Alabama. With Johni Broome leading the way this season, Bruce Pearl’s Auburn Tigers (15-1 overall) are set to take the top spot after wins over Texas and South Carolina to get to 3-0 in conference play.
Broome, regarded as a strong contender for National Player of the Year honors, left Auburn’s game at South Carolina on Saturday with a “significant” ankle sprain, according to Pearl.
Before the new Top 25 polls come out, here’s an updated look at SEC standings based on overall winning percentage.
