Jerry Jones could be calling on an old friend to fill the Dallas Cowboys’ head coach opening.
Hours after the Mike McCarthy and the Cowboys announced they had parted ways with head coach Mike McCarthy, multiple reports indicate that Jones, the team’s owner, has spoken with University of Colorado head football coach Deion Sanders about Dallas’ head coaching job.
FOX Sports’ Jordan Schultz was the first to report this development.
Sanders, 57, played for the Cowboys from 1995-1999, even winning a Super Bowl with the team in his first season in Dallas.
He has been the Colorado Buffaloes’ head coach for the last two seasons after signing a five-year, $29.5 million contract ahead of the 2023 season. He’s compiled a 13-12 record in his two years in charge, and the Buffaloes became bowl-eligible for the first time since 2020 with their 9-4 finish this season. They lost to BYU in the Alamo Bowl in late December.
Sanders’ son, Shedeur Sanders, was the team’s quarterback and is widely considered to be one of the top quarterback prospects in the 2025 NFL draft.
The Colorado coach was asked about a potential future coaching an NFL team back in the fall, but he was quick to deflect at the time.
“I’m happy where I am, man,” he said. “I’m good, I’m happy, I’m excited. I’m enthusiastic about where I am. I love it here, truly do.”
