Tommy Rees promoted from tight ends coach to be Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator

Tommy Rees was the first one to get an interview for the Browns’ offensive coordinator position. The tight ends coach/pass game specialist, at the end of the day, ended up being the man for the job.

A league source confirmed Tuesday the Browns are elevating Rees to the offensive coordinator position. He’ll replace Ken Dorsey, who was fired a day after their 3-14 season concluded.

Rees, who interviewed for the job last Wednesday, was one of five to speak with head coach Kevin Stefanski for the job. The others were Miami Dolphins quarterbacks coach/pass game coordinator Darrell Bevell, Atlanta Falcons tight ends coach Kevin Koger, Seattle Seahawks quarterbacks coach Charles London and, on Monday, New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak.

There’s not been any word on who will call the plays, although it’s likely that Stefanski takes that role over again. He had given those duties up for the first time in his head-coaching career over the final 10 games when Dorsey was the play-caller.

The 32-year-old Rees has been highly thought of inside of the Browns’ facility since he was hired a year ago. There was also a thought that Mike Vrabel, who spent this past season as a personnel and coaching consultant for the Browns, could try to steal Rees away as his offensive coordinator after being hired to be the New England Patriots’ new head coach.

Rees’ NFL coaching experience prior to this season was limited to one year (2016) as a San Diego Chargers offensive assistant. However, his resume included a pair of offensive coordinator jobs at two of the biggest programs in the sport: His alma mater, the University of…
