Former Stanford PK Joshua Karty (43) kicks a field goal attempt during the Reese’s Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2024.
A member of the San Francisco 49ers coaching staff will be part of the coaching staff at this year’s Senior Bowl.
The Senior Bowl announced the coaching staff for the American Team at this year’s pre-draft event, and the special teams coordinator for that group will be 49ers special teams quality control coach/game management specialist August Mangin.
Mangin has been with San Francisco since the 2021 season when he began his stint as the special teams quality control coach. He added the game management specialist duties in 2022.
It’s unclear if the club is considering him for their special teams coordinator role, but it’s not out of the question that his experience at the Senior Bowl may afford him an opportunity to move up on the staff.
The 49ers still haven’t hired a special teams coordinator after firing Brian Schneider at the end of the 2024 season. San Francisco has interviewed a handful of candidates, and head coach Kyle Shanahan indicated former defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen would also be a candidate for the role.
Mangin is on the Senior Bowl American Team staff with Cleveland Browns assistant head coach and special teams coordinator, and 49ers legend Bubba Ventrone (head coach), New York Giants running backs coach Joel Thomas (offensive coordinator), and Indianapolis Colts senior assistant defensive line coach Matt Raich (defensive coordinator).
The 2025 Senior Bowl is set to kick off Feb. 1 with a week of practices beforehand to give seniors a chance to showcase in front of NFL teams in attendance.
