Here are 56 million reasons why FSU coach Mike Norvell is NOT on hot seat | Commentary

Running off at the typewriter. …

Can we please stop with this nonsensical notion and these ludicrous lists that have Florida State’s Mike Norvell sitting atop the coaching hot seat heading into the 2025 season?

I’ve got 56 million reasons why Norvell won’t get fired even if he goes 2-10 again next season. I’m talking, of course, about his $56 million contract buyout that FSU is still on the hook for even after next season.

Seriously, do you really think Florida State’s athletic program, which is already spending nearly $300 million to renovate Doak Campbell Stadium and will soon have to start doling out more than $20 million a year in player salaries, has $56 million just laying around to pay Norvell NOT to coach? And that doesn’t even count the $60 or $70 million it would cost to hire a new coach and his staff to replace Norvell.

Then again, nobody spends other people’s money as lavishly as college athletic directors.

After Norvell’s Seminoles won 10 games two seasons ago, FSU gave him a big, fat raise and a contract extension that averaged $8 million a year. Not even a year later, after he went unbeaten in the 2023 regular season and flirted with Alabama following Nick Saban’s retirement, FSU athletic director Michael Alford panicked and gave Norvell yet another contract extension — this time it was a massive 8-year, $10 million-a-year contract.

After this past 2-10 season, I’m guessing now that Alford wishes he’d have offered Norvell a much more reasonable contract extension and if the coach then walked away and took the Alabama job, so be it. Instead, the Seminoles are stuck with Norvell whether they like it or not.

This is what happens when school presidents allow their ADs to spend money like Madonna at a plastic surgery convention.

It’s astounding that colleges continue to give coaches…
