Lou Holtz takes shot at Ohio State’s Ryan Day, picks Fighting Irish ahead of CFP championship

Monday’s College Football Playoff championship game between Ohio State and Notre Dame is expected to draw in a long list of celebrities and notable football faces.

That looks to include Ryan Day’s arch-enemy Lou Holtz.

The former Notre Dame head coach appeared to announce his plan to be at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Monday in a quote tweet of ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show” on X — while taking another slight jab at Day’s program.

“If Notre Dame doesn’t win, it’s because we want to preserve Ryan Day’s job,” Holtz said on X (formerly Twitter) Wednesday. “I was originally going to be at the game in spirit, but now I’ll be dragging my body along as well.”

The budding rivalry between Day and Holtz dates back to the day before last year’s meeting between Notre Dame and Ohio State in South Bend, Indiana.

During an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Holtz took an unprompted shot at Day and the Buckeyes. Holtz’s shot came after he replied yes to being asked if Notre Dame’s roster reminded him of his 1988 championship roster at Notre Dame by Ty Schmidt, one of Pat McAfee’s co-hosts that was impersonating the Notre Dame coach.

Instead of just leaving his answer at that, Holtz added some fuel by saying he believes Notre Dame was a better team than Ohio State. The Buckeyes were ranked No. 6 coming into the game, while the Irish were ranked No. 9.

Ohio State, of course, would pull off the road victory at Notre Dame Stadium last season on a last-second 1-yard rushing…
