Why Tennessee recruiting budget doubled in one year, records show

Tennessee sports doubled their recruiting budgets in the 2024 fiscal year, documents provided to Knox News show.

UT increased its recruiting expenses across all sports from $4.3 million in 2022-23 to $8.1 million in 2023-24.

Football made the biggest jump from $2.6 million to $5.4 million. That’s a growth rate of 103%.

Men’s basketball increased by 91%. It grew from $325,590 in 2022-23 to $622,588 in 2023-24.

Women’s basketball increased by 78%. It grew from $275,105 to $489,185.

All other sports, including baseball, are listed as a single expense. Those recruiting budgets grew by an average of 50%, from about $1.1 million to $1.6 million.

The 2023-24 fiscal year ended June 30. Universities were required to submit their annual fiscal reports to the NCAA in January, and UT provided its report to Knox News.

Recruiting expenses cover transportation, lodging and meals for recruits, additional personnel for official and unofficial visits, phone charges and postage for pursuing recruits and the value of schools’ vehicles and planes or those used by the school for recruiting.

Compensation for coaches and recruiting support staff is not included in the recruiting expenses.

Athletics director Danny White said recruiting is a high priority for UT, and the budget should reflect that. As the competition dedicates more money to recruiting, the Vols must keep pace and aim to pull ahead.
