Is there a chiropractor in the house? For Notre Dame football kicker Mitch Jeter, it was his dad

SOUTH BEND — It took a village to nurse Notre Dame football kicker Mitch Jeter back to full sporting health.

Healing his strained hip, groin, hamstring and adductor muscles required an army of physical therapists, massage therapists and rehab specialists over a three-month period before Jeter could kick the Irish into the national championship game with his 41-yard field goal to beat Penn State in the Orange Bowl semifinal.

It also took Epsom salts. Bags and bags of Epsom salts.

Dr. Andrew Jeter, a licensed chiropractor for nearly three decades, made sure his son never ran out of those.

“We had him taking Epsom salt baths every night,” Andrew Jeter said this week in a phone interview from his Salisbury, N.C., clinic. “I know that’s an old remedy, but it’s still great for muscles because of the magnesium.”

Nursing Notre Dame football’s kicker back to health

In addition to chiropractic adjustments that have been part of family visits throughout the younger Jeter’s sports career, including four seasons at South Carolina, Jeter’s parents also made countless trips to CVS and Meijer locations around South Bend and Mishawaka in search of a trusted elixir.

“We would go to stores and absolutely buy out their supply of Epsom salts,” Andrew Jeter said. “I know they thought we were nuts when we came through the checkout counter with a buggy full of Epsom salts, but that’s what he needed. He had to have it.”

After likely injuring both hips on a busted play in the Miami (Ohio) game on Sept. 21, Jeter suffered a Grade1/2 groin strain while kicking off against Stanford three weeks later. He made it back…
