Mike Sonneborn, who led Southside Christian football to high school state championships in 2020 and 2021, has resigned as coach.
The announcement was made Thursday by Mike Johnson, executive director of athletics at Southside Christian.
Sonneborn spent eight seasons with the Sabres and is the winningest coach in program history, going 77-29. From Sonneborn’s arrival in 2017 through 2021, the Sabres went 54-7. They were a combined 22-0 in winning those state titles in Class A after being moved from Class AA. Southside Christian beat Lake View, 46-6, for the championship in 2020 and Bamberg-Ehrhardt, 28-0, in 2021.
Sonneborn was offensive coordinator for Southside Christian’s first state championship in 2015 under Jason Kaiser.
Southside Christian was 2-8 in 2024, the Sabres’ only losing season under Sonneborn. His career record is 175-53.
“We would like to thank Coach Sonneborn for his 10 years of dedicated service to SCS,” Johnson said in a news release. “… Coach Sonneborn also helped start the SCS youth sports football rec program, and for the first two years of its existence, he coached one of those teams in the fall as well as coaching both the JV and varsity teams.
“… I have had the privilege of working with Coach Sonneborn and seeing his desire to impact young men for Christ. I would often hear him say that football is a hard game, and his desire was to use the game to develop godly men who will be great husbands, fathers, and will excel wherever God has them in the future.”
