Top 10 moments from Penn State’s 2024 season: Tyler Warren wins Mackey Award (No. 4)

With Penn State’s football season now officially in the books, now is a good time to start putting the whole season into perspective. Although the season ended with the Nittany Lions coming up just short of playing for a national championship, there were a lot of good moments to reflect on positively from the 2024 season that ended with a final record of 13-3. The shortcomings are well documented, but the highlights of the year should not be forgotten.

Prior to the 2024 season, Penn State never had a tight end win the John Mackey Award as the nation’s top tight end. But Penn State never had a fully unleashed Tyler Warren before 2024 either.

Warren was the winner of the nation’s top tight end award in 2024, edging Bowling Green’s Harold Fannin Jr., who led the nation with 117 catches and 1,555 receiving yards. Despite Fannin’s bigger numbers and higher touchdown catch count, Warren provided big plays in big moments while helping Penn State reach the Big Ten championship game and College Football Playoff semifinal. His versatility in the Penn State offense also came into play as offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki found ways to use Warren that no other coordinator could dream of.

Kotelnicki was not afraid to have Warren, a former high school quarterback, take snaps in short-yardage situations, which Warren thrived with throughout his Penn State career. Warren even snapped the football in one of the highlights of the season when he lined up at center and raced down the field for a big touchdown catch at USC.

Although with the benefit of having extra games played with the Big Ten championship game and three College Football Playoff games, Warren ended his season with a Big Ten-leading 1,233 receiving yards (Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith entered the national championship game just six yards behind…
