Herbstreit really likes what Freeman has done at Notre Dame

Jan. 18—ATLANTA — ESPN and ABC’s Kirk Herbstreit says Notre Dame football coach Marcus Freeman has achieved legendary status in his first three seasons as the Fighting Irish’s head coach.

“They’ve been searching. You almost have to go back to the early and mid-90s for the last time Notre Dame was really a giant in this sport. Whether they win this game or not, to go from where they were to where they are now and where they are heading with Marcus Freeman, if I were a Notre Dame fan, this is to me going to be a really exciting era,” the former Ohio State quarterback said on Saturday at media day for the College Football Playoff national championship game.

“Because when they get on the field with Georgia, when they get on the field with Ohio State it feels different than it has in the past. I think it’s because of the recruiting and the development and the culture.

“I already put him at that legendary status. Never been a head coach, coaching at Notre Dame with all that pressure and to get them here, that’s a heck of a start.”

SECOND FAMILY: Ever wonder how many hours an Ohio State football player works on his craft during a season?

Offensive lineman Luke Montgomery provided some numbers at Saturday’s media day for the College Football Playoff national championship game.

“I’ve been home for 40 to 56 hours since July. I was home one day for Christmas and I don’t remember what the other one was. I didn’t even go home on any of the bye weeks,” he said.

“It just shows you all the work we put in and how this is like my family here now, especially in the position room. Those are brothers for life. It’s the same for all of us, as well. It’s exciting. We’re excited for each other and the opportunity that is ahead of us.”

Montgomery has played major minutes in all three of OSU’s playoff games and got his first career start…
