Memphis football has a new defensive line coach.
Joe Cauthen will replace Spence Nowinsky, coach Ryan Silverfield announced Sunday afternoon. Nowinsky is expected to be the next defensive coordinator at New Mexico.
That opened up the spot for Cauthen, who spent 2024 as a defensive analyst with the Tigers and now earns a promotion. He has a long career in college football, having served as a defensive coordinator at multiple programs, including Arkansas State, Houston and Utah State.
“Joe is an experienced coach who brings so much to our program,” Silverfield said in a statement. “He was able to assist our defense this past season and will be a wonderful coach for our defensive line.”
Cauthen will be tasked with running a unit that lost most of its production from 2024 but returns first team All-AAC defensive lineman William Whitlow Jr. Whitlow initially entered the transfer portal after the season but withdrew.
It’s a job that’s undergone significant turnover in the past year. Kyle Pope left for Georgia Tech after the 2023 season and was replaced by Lou Esposito, who left for Michigan months later. Then came Nowinsky, who leaves Memphis after less than a calendar year.
Cauthen’s promotion is the second coaching change of the offseason. Secondary coach Charles Clark left for Purdue, and Silverfield promoted Reggie Howard to replace him while hiring Jay Simpson as cornerbacks coach.
