ATLANTA – Sky watchers need not scan the heavens Monday in search of supernovas ready to collide in a dazzling display of star power.
All it requires is to open the laptop, turn on the TV or take your seat in the 75,000-seat planetarium that is Mercedes-Benz Stadium, where viewers will receive a double dose of celestial seasoning. At 7:30 p.m., two of the brightest objects in the college football galaxy will light up the night, with the added bonus of catching a glimpse of northern lights in the south.
When Ohio State and Notre Dame put up their dukes in the first College Football Playoff championship game of the 12-team era, it not only should be a ratings bonanza for ESPN – anything less than 20 million viewers would be disappointing – but it also brings together two of the most recognizable brands in the country.
And neither is from the South. Imagine that. The superiority-driven folks of the Southeastern Conference ask, “Do we have to?” In SEC strongholds such as Tuscaloosa, Gainesville and Athens, the truth stings. This will be only the second national title game since 2014, when Ohio State topped Oregon, without at least one southern team involved. Michigan defeated Washington in last year’s title tilt.
Doubling down on Dixie, it also is the first time two Midwest teams will play each for the natty in a bowl or playoff format since … ever. Finally, all pop, no soda.
Want more CFP championship game fizz? Ohio State ranks second all-time with 977 wins. Notre Dame is fourth with 962. The Fighting Irish own eight national titles, counted from the first Associated Press poll in 1936, and the Buckeyes have six. Each school houses seven Heismans in the trophy case.
