‘Torn’ former Florida football coach Urban Meyer offers pick for Ohio State-ND CFP title game

When it comes to Monday’s College Football Playoff championship game between Ohio State and Notre Dame, former Florida football coach Urban Meyer has mixed emotions.

Meyer was a wide receivers coach at Notre Dame from 1996-2000, but grew up in Ashtabula, Ohio, and worked as a graduate assistant at Ohio State from 1986-87 under Earle Bruce. After leaving Florida, Meyer went on to become head coach at Ohio State, where we went 83-9 in seven seasons and guided the Buckeyes to the 2014 national championship.

“I coached at Notre Dame for a long time, I’m Irish Catholic, my son was baptized there,” Meyer said.

“The Buckeyes, Ryan (Day) was my coach my hand-picked successor. I think Notre Dame’s toughness, resilience in the locker room will keep it close but the injuries at tailback and defense I think the second half Ohio State will prevail.”

Meyer, in Gainesville on Friday for a charity event at Spurrier’s Gridiron Grill that benefitted Desire Street Ministries, the Tim Tebow Foundation and the HBC Foundation, will cover the CFP title game on Sunday and Monday in Atlanta, Ga., for the Big Ten Network. Earlier this week, Meyer was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame after leading the Florida Gators and Ohio State to three national titles.

Meyer recounted a story when he reached out to Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman after the Irish suffered an upset loss to Marshall in Freeman’s first season. He was merely passing along what Mack Brown did for him, when while at Florida, Meyer suffered a gut-wrenching loss to Alabama during his first season at UF.

“Mack Brown said he was looking at the TV and he sees my interview after I lost to Alabama, 05, and he said I better call that dude, he looks like someone .. there’s a problem and he really helped me through some stuff,” Meyer said. “So I called Marcus Freeman and…
