High school football: Centerville names new head coach

Jan. 19—Centerville football’s new coach is John Puckett.

The school announced Saturday that Puckett has been hired to replace Brent Ullery, who stepped down in December after leading the Elks to the state semifinals.

“Since I joined Centerville in 2010, becoming the head football coach has been my dream,” Puckett said in a news release. “We have an ideal combination of outstanding administration, strong community and parental support and amazing kids.”

Puckett has been a football coach for 25 years, including 11 as an assistant coach at Centerville and three as head coach at Butler from 2018-20.

He is an intervention specialist at CHS, where he works with students with special needs.

New athletic director Brandon Hon handled the hire after taking over for Rob Dement earlier this month.

“John has been a cornerstone of our program for years, alongside departing head coach Brent Ullery, serving as defensive coordinator and playing an instrumental role in the development of our young men,” Hon said in a news release.

“His commitment to excellence and passion for our students both on the field and in the classroom has established him as a well-respected leader within our community. We are excited to see our Elks take the field under his guidance in just a few month.”

Ullery led the Elks to a 58-34 record and three conference championship in eight seasons at the helm of his alma mater.

Puckett will be Centerville’s fifth full-time head coach since 1973, joining Bob Gregg (1973-99), Ron Ullery (2000-13), Rodney Roberts (2014-16) and Brent Ullery.

“I am extremely thankful for the opportunity to uphold the Elks’ tradition of toughness,” Puckett said.
