When Gerad Parker announced he had accepted the head coaching job at Troy before Notre Dame’s Sun Bowl game last season, the Irish were in need of a new offensive coordinator.
To fill the hole on his staff, Marcus Freeman filled it with a familiar face: former Notre Dame associate head coach and offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock.
It was a move that seemed like a “home run” hire for Notre Dame but also one that was surprising, given Denbrock had orchestrated the No. 1 scoring offense at LSU and reportedly had signed an extension with the Tigers β but said extension wasn’t approved yet by LSU’s Board of Supervisors.

In Denbrock’s first season back at Notre Dame, the Irish have posted the No. 6 scoring offense (37.0 points per game) in the country behind quarterback Riley Leonard and running back Jeremiyah Love. The Irish have outscored their opponents 77-51 in the postseason en route to their College Football Playoff championship game appearance.
On Monday night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Denbrock’s unit will be tasked with overcoming the No. 1 scoring defense and total defense that is No. 8 Ohio State. A win on Monday in the CFP championship game would give Notre Dame its first national championship trophy since 1988.
