For the second season in a row, a Big Ten team has ended the season on top of the college football world. Ohio State started the 12-team College Football Playoff era the way it did the four-team playoff era by winning the national championship on Monday night in Atlanta. The Buckeyes blew out Notre Dame by building a decisive 31-7 lead before closing out a 34-23 win for all of the marbles.
For Penn State, this was another tough pill to swallow knowing how close Penn State was to being in the national championship game. Penn State doesn’t have a good history against Ohio State, but history would also suggest Penn State might have put up a better fight against its longtime Big Ten foe. But who honestly knows what the alternate timeline looks like. Ohio State was on a mission and was the hottest team in the playoff after ending its regular season with a humbling loss at home to bitter rival Michigan.
So kudos to the Buckeyes for taking advantage of its opportunity in the 12-team College Football Playoff. If not for the expanded playoff field, Ohio State would have been left out of the playoff. Ohio State started the year as a national title favorite and proved why in the end. After watching Michigan win it all last season and Ohio State win it all this season, Penn State will continue to work to be the next Big Ten team to hold the trophy at the end of the season.
Putting Penn State’s season into some perspective, it is notable the Nittany Lions lost three games all by one score. And the three games they lost came against then-no. 1 Oregon in the Big Ten championship game, eventual national champion Ohio State, and national championship runner-up Notre Dame in the semifinal round. It seems to be the theme of the program to only have the highest-quality losses possible.
Penn State is already drawing some preseason hype…
