Where Penn State lands in USA TODAY Sports way-too-early top 25 ranking

After an impressive season capped by a run to the College Football Playoff semifinals, Penn State is now seen as a perennial CFP contender thanks to the expanded, 12-team field. The Nittany Lions still have a lot to play for after a disappointing end to the season that saw the program lose to Notre Dame in the Orange Bowl and miss out on a chance to play for a national championship. With many way-too-early top 25 rankings coming out, Penn State is already receiving some buzz that it will be one of the top-ranked teams in the country heading into the 2025 season.

USA TODAY Sports ranked Penn State as the No. 4 team for next fall. The Nittany Lions were ranked behind newly crowned champions Ohio State, Texas and Alabama. The returning trio of Drew Allar, Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen seems to make a strong case that Penn State should be viewed as a team within college football’s upper echelon.

After Tom Allen left for Clemson, a new defensive coordinator will call the defense, but that shouldn’t stop Penn State’s defense from being one of the top units in the country.

The makings are all there for another championship run, with Penn State returning most of what made them so great this season.
