Former Oxford High and Fitchburg State star quarterback Corey Hetherman has left the University of Minnesota to become the defensive coordinator at the University of Miami.
When Corey Hetherman was starting — and starring — at quarterback for Fitchburg State in the early 2000s, he was a frequent denizen of the football offices.
The former Oxford High three-sport standout watched more film than a movie critic and asked more questions than a detective, leading him to jokingly wonder all these years later if Falcons coach and mentor Pat Haverty “wanted to kill him.”
It was all in the passionate pursuit of carving out a career as a football coach himself.
“I wanted to coach, and I think I knew that right away,” Hetherman, 41, said late last week from Florida. “This is definitely what I always wanted to do … and it didn’t really matter where.
“I think it was more about being able to coach football and help young players get to where they want to be. That’s always the ultimate goal.”

Where Hetherman is now is the University of Miami following a whirlwind sequence earlier this month.
The Hurricanes hired Hetherman as defensive coordinator on Jan. 12, just over a week after he helped the University of Minnesota cap an 8-5 season with a win over Virginia Tech in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in Charlotte, North Carolina.
“We win the bowl game, go right into (transfer portal) recruiting, and then this opportunity came up,” Hetherman said. “The next day I was in Miami. But, no, it’s been great.
“All the support from my wife, my family and, obviously, from the University of Miami and all the staff here.”
