The Ohio State Buckeyes celebrate their 34-23 win over Notre Dame Fighting Irish to win the College Football Playoff National Championship at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on January 20, 2025.
The final college football game of the season also happened to be the most watched.
Not surprising given the matchup between the Ohio State Buckeyes and Notre Dame Fighting Irish was for a national title, which the Buckeyes won 34-23.
The battle between two Midwest football titans helped ESPN to a ratings win, delivering 22.1 million viewers this past Monday, making it the most watched game of the expanded College Football Playoff, which now features 12 teams. The game peaked at 26.1 million viewers in the first half, which could mean plenty of football fans, sensing a blowout, didn’t stick around.
It also became the most-watched non-NFL sporting event over the past year, confirming that football is indeed king in the United States.
It is necessary to note, however, that when compared to last year’s game between the Michigan Wolverines and Washington Huskies delivered an average of 25.1 million viewers.
