While Ohio State celebrated its 34-23 win over Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff’s championship game on Monday night, the countdown to the start of the 2025 football season began for the Texas Longhorns.
For those keeping track at home, the Longhorns officially have 222 days until their season opener at Ohio State. Texas went 13-3 during its 2024 campaign and reached the CFP semifinals for the second straight year.
Is Texas poised for another appearance in the CFP semifinals? The national media certainly thinks so. In fact, Texas was listed as a championship contender in numerous “Way-Too-Early Top-25” articles posted while the confetti was still being cleaned up at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

USA Today analysis: “It’s officially the Arch Manning era in Austin with Quinn Ewers off to the NFL. Expectations will be unrealistic, and the reality is that Manning has limited game experience against SEC competition. Complicating matters are some major concerns at receiver, the offensive line and the defensive line. But this is a team full of talent compiled through strong recruiting classes and targeted transfers. Look for Ryan Wingo to emerge as Manning’s top target and for the defense to be led by LB Anthony Hill and DL Colin Simmons.”
