It’s too bad for Memphis football fans that Gus Malzahn is no longer the coach of UCF.
Malzahn had the Tigers ranked higher than any other coach in the final US LBM Coaches Poll released on Tuesday. But he left to become the offensive coordinator at Florida State, ensuring his time as a coaches poll voter will end.
The voting panel is a rotating group of FBS coaches. Memphis finished ranked No. 23 in the poll.
Who ranked Memphis the highest?
Malzahn had Memphis at No. 15, while Liberty’s Jamey Chadwell had the Tigers at No. 18. Washington’s Jedd Fisch and Pittsburgh’s Pat Narduzzi ranked Memphis No. 19.
Maryland’s Mike Locksley and San Jose State’s Ken Niumatalolo had Memphis at No. 20.
Where former Memphis assistants had the Tigers
Buffalo coach Pete Lembo served as Memphis’s special teams coach from 2019-20, but he showed the Tigers no love in the final poll and left them unranked. Former Memphis offensive coordinator and current Arizona State coach Kenny Dillingham ranked the Tigers No. 21, while former Memphis linebackers coach and current Oregon coach Dan Lanning also had Memphis at No. 21.
Tigers coach Ryan Silverfield was not a voter in the poll this season.

Air Force’s Troy Calhoun, Houston’s Willie Fritz, SMU’s Rhett Lashlee, Miami Ohio’s Chuck Martin, Texas Tech’s Joey McGuire along with Lembo did not rank Memphis.
