Will Arizona State’s Kenny Dillingham win final college football coach of the year award?

Arizona State football coach Kenny Dillingham has been passed up for several major college football coach of the year awards this season despite leading the Sun Devils to 11 wins, a Big 12 conference championship and an appearance in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals after winning just three games last season and being picked to finish last in the Big 12 this season.

Will he finally take home a national coach of the year honor on Wednesday?

The Paul “Bear” Bryant College Football Coach of the Year Award is set to be awarded that day and Dillingham is among eight finalists for the honor, joining South Carolina’s Shane Beamer, Indiana’s Curt Cignetti, Boise State’s Spencer Danielson, Notre Dame’s Marcus Freeman, SMU’s Rhett Lashlee, Army’s Jeff Monken and Texas’ Steve Sarkisian.

The award is given to a “college football coach for contributions that make the sport better for athletes and fans alike by demonstrating grit, integrity and a winning approach to coaching and life – both on and off the field,” with voting by the National Sports Media Association, the Bryant Awards’ Executive Leadership Team and the Bryant Family.

Sports Illustrated’s Ben Sherman wrote that Dillingham deserved to win the award on Wednesday.

“The debate over who should be the college football coach of the year was settled long ago,” he wrote. “But after leading Arizona State on one of the most miraculous runs in sports history — not just college football history — 34-year-old Sun Devils coach Dillingham all but secured the coveted award in early December.”
