Jan. 22—When he decided to attend Lakewood St. Edward, Bradley Eaton thought his athletic future was on the wrestling mat.
Three years, and two football state championships later, the Conneaut native knows he was meant to for the gridiron.
Eaton, a senior, has announced he has accepted a scholarship offer to Princeton University where he’ll study business and play football.
“It was a big weight off my shoulders,” he said of his decision. “It was something that took around three years, waiting for everything to develop and see what the future holds, then picking what I thought was the best opportunity for myself. It feels great.”
Though heavily involved in football during his time at Conneaut Junior High, it wasn’t something Eaton envisioned himself playing when he arrived at Ed’s. Instead, his focus was on wrestling and the dream of becoming a Division I state champion.
But in his sophomore year, Eaton decided to put the pads back on. A couple of years later, he knows he’s not ready to take them off for good.
“Sometimes it takes time to figure out what sport you feel like you truly love,” he said. “I always knew that going to college, I was going to have to pick one. Everyone knows I love wrestling, too, but at Ed’s, I kind of fell in love with football and I wasn’t ready to be done.”
After not playing his freshman season, Eaton started at defensive back as a sophomore on the Eagles team that won the state title in 2022, then again in 2023. He was the first sophomore to start in school history.
This past season, he became the first player in several years to be a two-way starter. Aside from playing safety, he also played running back and gained 1,200 yards and 16 touchdowns.
Eaton also played on special teams.
