After 10 years as Neshaminy football head coach, Steve Wilmot believes the time is right for him to step down so that’s what he did Thursday afternoon.
“It was not a decision that was easy to make,” said Wilmot, 53, in his resignation letter. “There are not many places in the State of Pennsylvania that are better to coach.”
Wilmot compiled a 64-42 record, highlighted by Suburban One League National Conference championships in 2016 and ’17. Neshaminy enjoyed a 10-0 regular season in 2016 and reached the PIAA District One Class 6A semifinals in ’15 before falling to North Penn.
Neshaminy went 6-5 in his final season, qualifying for the PIAA district playoffs, where his team lost to Owen J. Roberts in the opening round. Son Jason was a senior running back last fall.

“It was a great honor and privilege to play under him,” said junior quarterback Mike Eckart. “His impact on the players — not just on the field but in their lives — is (incalculable). I can speak for everyone in the locker room that he will be deeply missed and we cannot thank him enough for what he has given us.”
Asked which was his best team, Wilmot replied, “2016 was pretty solid. We were a little injured as we got deeper in the playoffs (losing in the quarterfinals).”
In an interview, he said what he’ll miss the most is “the players and the daily interactions. There is really not a more rewarding job than being a high school football coach.”
Wilmot, a biology teacher at the high school, was a Neshaminy assistant coach for 20 years before taking over as head coach for Mike Frederick in 2015.
