Vinnie Sunseri named new co-DC, safeties coach for Florida football, per reports

According to multiple reports, Florida football is set to hire Vinnie Sunseri as its new co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach.

The 33-year-old Sunseri had just taken the defensive coordinator job at Jacksonville (Alabama) State after spending last year as the safeties coach at Washington under Jedd Fisch.

With Sunseri’s help, Washington’s defense ranked first in the Big Ten in passing defense (166.5 ypg allowed) in 2024.

Sunseri would replace former Florida Gators co-defensive coordinator Austin Armstrong, who left last December to take the defensive coordinator job at Houston.

Prior to Washington, Sunseri worked for four years with the New England Patriots under head coach Bill Belichick, first as a defensive assistant in 2019 and then as running backs coach from 2020-23.

A Pittsburgh, Pa., native, Sunseri is the son of Sal Sunseri, a long-time college and NFL football coach and consensus All-America linebacker at Pitt in 1981. As a player, Sunseri played safety under Nick Saban at Alabama from 2011-13, winning two national titles, before going on to a three-year NFL career from 2014-16 with the New Orleans Saints, San Francisco 49ers and New England Patriots.

Sunseri will join secondary coach Will Harris as the second Florida coach on staff with Washington ties (Harris was the defensive backs coach at Washington from 2018-21) and special teams analyst Joe Houston as the second coach to have worked under Belichick with the Patriots (Houston worked for the Patriots from 2020-23 as a special teams assistant).
